JOURNALISM
I first visited what was then still Czechoslovakia in 1992, loved it, and decided to come back. I moved to Prague in 1993, and spent the first four years teaching English.
My journalism career began at ‘Četka’ – the venerable Česká tisková kancelář or Czech News Agency (ČTK) in 1997. I worked in the so-called ‘Export Section’ – producing a daily digest of news in English for diplomatic missions and businesses in Prague.
Two years later I moved up the road to Radio Prague – the English Service of Czech Radio, as a reporter and later head of the English section. It was here that I learnt the craft of radio broadcasting, and much more besides.
I began offering radio pieces to the BBC World Service, and in 2004 I became the full-time Prague correspondent, covering Czech and Slovak news stories for BBC Radio, BBC TV and BBC News Online. I’ve been doing the job ever since.
I’ve had the great fortune to report from beyond the confines of the Czech and Slovak republics, and have covered stories from Albania to America, Moscow to Milan. Prague, though, remains my home.
And as a freelancer I also work for other broadcasters – principally Deutsche Welle, ORF, RTÉ and Monocle Radio.
